Back to the East Coast, I’ve decided to try my hand at Montrose Football Club’s badge. Founded in 1879, Montrose have been hacking away in the lower leagues of Scottish football for 135 years with not much to show for it aside from local cups (they are ten time winners of the Forfarshire Cup), but that doesn’t stop this semi-professional outfit from fighting on (nor should it!).
For my redesign I was inspired by a design that only featured for one season (1973-74), featuring the ‘M’ flanked by ‘F’ and ‘C’. The diagonal strokes on the ‘M’ meet well below the baseline. In addition to the very deep crotch on the ‘M’, I decided to add the rose (from the folk etymological ‘Mount of Roses’) and the date of the founding on top to create a stronger sense of centrality.
